Detainee 005 was arrested in December 2005 and held in Belmarsh Prison before being moved to Full Sutton prison. He was released from prison recently and placed under a control order. His movements are restricted and he is not allowed any visitors.

HHUGS is in regular contact with Detainee 005 and here is a recent account of a Hhugs volunteer.

“I spoke to Detainee 005 this evening. He was so delighted with the amazing parcel of CDs and books that HHUGS collected for him. He was in such happy spirits regardless of the fact that only 15 minutes before I called him (at 10.15pm), he had the police – 3 in uniform and 2 taggers visit his home. The police said his tag wasn’t working properly but they used the excuse to search his home again. I find Detainee 005’s sad story so incredible. He is slowly telling me. He had never had any trouble with the police before or been near a prison. He had exceptional leave to remain in this country, had a driving license and was hoping for indefinite leave to remain. When they arrested him, they put him for eleven days in the Special Secure Unit in Belmarsh where he said it felt like eleven years. Then they sent him to Full Sutton. He didn’t even have legal representation until a nice brother found a solicitor for him.

When they released him under control orders, they put him in a filthy flat where he had never been before and knew no one. He only had the clothes he stood in as the police had taken all his clothes when he was arrested. This was in the middle of winter – December ? and he did not even have a jacket to keep him warm. This is hard to believe, isn’t it? When they left him in the flat on that first day, one of the policemen bought him a fish supper as there was no food at all in the house. They also gave him a map of the area that he could move in. He lived on that fish supper for three days before he got any money to buy any food at all. Is this not the most shameful thing? He said he felt like a blind man and a non person. English people wouldn’t even treat a dog like this, would they? He had a gas fire in his sitting room but the one in the bedroom didn’t work and it still isn’t working but he is not worried about this now as the weather is hotter. But in the middle of winter, he just used the one room. He had nothing except his Quran. Absolutely nothing!

He is so happy that he has the support of Hhugs. The Home Office has put in his phone so now he can call his Mum but he didn’t worry her with his circumstances. He even had to buy his own phone and he has no phone book. I tried to get one sent to him from BT but because he is not the name on the contract – we don’t know what name he is under they won’t even supply him with a book. He thanks HHUGS for all the generosity HHUGS has shown him. He will write to HHUGS personally but wanted me to tell you that he received your gift. I think this will keep him occupied. He doesn’t even go out much as he has nowhere to go and no one to meet. I hope it gets better for him soon.”
